Savannah Design and Consultancy Talk / M10110801 M.N.Barry

The speaker started with a brief introduction about their Company, Savannah Design and Consultancy, they do design business/consulting as well as brand business. Some of the Company’s famous brands are iloomi, Henry’s Collection, Still-Fit, etc. Iloomi perhaps the most popular one, as it’s creative lighting designs have won several awards, such as the iF International Forum Design Awards. The speaker also mentioned about their partnerships with other companies in Europe, in particular Rief Design, a design and development agency in Munich. Savanna also have a representative (one of it’s senior staff) based in the United States.
The speaker then moved on to explain their product design process, they seem to employ a user-centered design approach as he made mention of developing emotional ties and ergonomics.
He showed 2 different types of design process models. The first from a customer’s point of view, and the second from Savanna’s point of view. I’ll have to say, both seemed very familiar to what we normally see in the design business, nothing new really. However, I believe its a very good model and works well if carried out effectively. Even though all design firms seem to follow the same blueprint, their strategies will obviously differ in some aspects such as marketing plan and sales. Companies tend to give bias to particular stages of the design process, which also leads to a difference in strategy. I think most of the time it comes down to the amount of resources the company has, in particular financial resources. I made this conclusion after a brief discussion with the Speaker, in which he made a comment that his company tries to do just enough to make sure they are still in business by making quality designs at affordable prices compared to other big brands they are competing locally.
The speaker then explained about the nature function of design sketches before he went on to end his speech. To be honest, I didn’t get much of what he was saying here not because I don’t understand Chinese but I happen to have a very short concentration span and the talk was kind of long in opinion. Overall, it was a very nice talk.
