Hearing Director Chen's speech triggered my thoughts revolving product design. What's notable is that Director Chen seems to advocate things opposite to Professor Braham. On the surface, Chen believes that products should include elements other than functional forms, while Braham believes that form should still follow design.
Yet, after much dwelling on the issue, I believe we are witnessing a evolutional process of design. First, we enjoyed products that are concerntrated on their functions and quality. And now it seems that in additional to functions, designers today have the luxury to use new materials and methods to include more stylistic elements. "We are selling a lifestyle," says Chen. This is much more than what we've encountered in our designs previously.
By comparing the two, it almost seems that Professor Braham's points led to Director Chen's. This is not only an interesting discovery but at the same time, a tracable path that answers the reasons for our designs today. Professor Braham had said that as designers we should be proactive, and perhaps including a lifestlye that adds complexity to our products is a great way to entertain the consumers today.
