I must say that I feel extremely fortunate to have the chance to hear Professor Branham speak for his extensive knowledge on design is simply incomparable to anyone I’ve heard in the past.
During the first part of the lecture, Professor Branham showed us valuable insights to how designers may understand users and in turn improve our designs. But nothing hit me harder than when he danced with passion and screamed that we as designers should be pro-active!
Professor Branham believes that design is the enhancement of product, and as designers we should strive to influence our users and make lives better. When I heard the word “proactive,” something clicked inside of me. For the longest time, I pondered on what a designer’s value to society is. I asked myself repeatedly what I can do to create meaning, but I was trapped in the never-ending spiral of being passive. I am sure that many of us in Taiwan share similar problems, especially with merciless businessmen like 蔣友柏, who promotes the degrading of designers as simple laborers. Yet, when we put ourselves in the positive light, there are many things that a designers can do for our society. And best of all, now I do not need a problem to solve, all I need is a situation to improve on!
